Choosing the right boiler can be very exciting but also hard as it requires a lot of research to know what’s best for a long term investment. Considering functionality, efficiency and of course the boiler price, you would want something that is suitable for your needs and doesn’t brake the bank. At HeatMe Plumbers we decided to list the most important criterias when choosing a boiler or considering a new boiler installation . If in doubt, you can always rely on our expertise in helping you choose a boiler suitable for your needs.
1. Number of bedrooms and radiators, number of bathrooms
Probably the most important aspect when choosing a central heating system and boiler is the size of your house, number of radiators and number of bathrooms. For a small 2 bedroom flat with 1 bathroom a 24kW combi boiler is sufficient to provide heating and hot water. For a 3 bedroom house with 1 bathroom and 1 shower, you can get away with a powerflul 38kW combi boiler that will have 16liters per minute flowrate, that will allow 2 people showering at the same time. But when you are renovating a 4+ bedroom house with 2 bathrooms and 1 en-suite, then a combi boiler may not be able to provide you with the required flow-rate in case 3 people are taking a shower at once, which will result in poor flow from the shower head and low pressure. This is when you need to consider a System Boiler with a MegaFlo cylinder. We can assess your property, by checking the size of the water mains, flowrate, mains pressure and provide you with a solution for whatever it is you want to achieve.
2. The manufacturer
Top of the range boilers include Vaillant, Worcester Bosch, Ideal, Baxi.
The modern design makes this boiler easy to service and repair, and parts are widely available should anything go wrong after the warranty expires.
3. Warranty
From a service and maintenance point of view, we say go with an extended warranty, the bigger the better. You will have the peace of mind that should your boiler brake-down, it will not cost you a small fortune to get it fixed! Because we are accredited installers, we offer up to 10 years extended warranties on Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi and Worcester boilers. Your boiler must be serviced every year in order to be covered by the warranty.
4. Combi or System
Comparing the Combi and System boilers we want to highlight main benefits of each type. Combi boilers use water that feeds directly from the mains, meaning that hot water is always available on-demand and water pressure remains high even after extended periods of heavy use. System boilers are to be integrated with a unvented hot water storage cylinder and are generally for larger houses with 3+ bathrooms, requiring higher flowrates that cannot be achieved by a combi boiler.
5. Efficiency
Boilers are rated on an efficiency scale running from A to G. Boilers rated A are the most energy efficient. All new condensing boilers are now A rated, that’s why when replacing your old conventional boiler you will be saving a lot on your gas bill, have a more efficient system and lower the carbon footprint.
