How does Air Source Heat Pump work?

A heat pump operates by extracting heat from the air outside your home, even in cold weather, and transferring it to a specialized liquid known as a refrigerant. The refrigerant absorbs the warmth and undergoes a phase change, transforming into a gas. Through compression, the gas becomes even hotter. This heat is then transferred to a separate water source, which is distributed to a central heating system to warm up the entire house. The gas subsequently condenses back into a liquid, and the cycle repeats itself.

Before you decide to install one

To optimize the efficiency of heat pumps, it is crucial to have well-insulated buildings that can maintain a comfortable temperature without significant heat loss. Therefore, before considering a heat pump, it is important to ensure that your home is adequately insulated.

Another requirement for heat pumps is the presence of a hot water cylinder. If your property does not already have one (e.g., if you have a gas combination boiler), you will need to consider the installation location within your property.

Heat pumps generate heat at a lower temperature compared to traditional central heating systems and from a financial standpoint, heat pumps are most advantageous for properties currently using storage heaters or LPG boilers for heating.

Keep in mind that although the heat pump unit itself doesn’t occupy much space, it needs to be installed outside in an area with sufficient airflow. Air source heat pumps contain a fan that generates a low background noise, so it is important to consider your neighbors when determining the placement of the unit.
